The God Who Wasn’t There

December 3rd, 2006

I just found a great 1-hour documentary on Christianity. It’s by Brian Flemming, who was brought up as a born-again Christian and educated at a particularly obnoxious Christian school (which has a medieval crusader in full armor as its emblem), but then he started to think for himself. This documentary is the result.

It doesn’t pretend to be exhaustive but it covers all the main points that Christians try to weasel around and the ways they try to protect themselves against any kind of real scrutiny of their claims and of the validity and value of their faith and lifestyle. It covers both the historical foundations of Christianity and the nature and effects of present-day Christianity. Excellent interviews with intelligent and knowledgeable scholars, great editing and structure, great soundtrack. It also covers the Christian obsession with pain, torture and suffering and towards the end there is a highly revealing interview with the principal of Flemming’s former school. Highly recommended.
