The Federalist Papers were published under the pseudonym Publius, and the Anti-Federalist Papers as Cato. Common Sense, Thomas Paine's revolutionary pamphlet, was published anonymously. Poor Richard's Almanac was a pseudonym for Benjamin Franklin. Somewhere along the way, Americans stopped using (stopped needing to use?) anonymity so much, but it does have a rich tradition in U.S. history.
