Apple’s Migration Assistant is just as bad as Microsoft’s upgrade
February 18th, 2007
It turns out that the slowness problem on my Mac Pro was caused by following Apple’s automatic instructions and using the Migration Assistant program to transfer my data to the Mac Pro from my old Power PC G4 Power Mac.
And this was not caused by old Power PC applications running on the new Intel-based Mac. I checked this again and again with Activity Monitor and not a single PPC application was running for any user or any part of the system. And even so, doing a complete clean install results in a computer that feels like it’s from another planet.
Moral of the story: No human programmers, and thus no operating system manufacturers, are able to transfer your programs and settings from one machine to another without creating a dog’s dinner. Apple is just as happy to screw up your new computer as Microsoft, and does just as good a job at making an unholy mess. If you have a new computer then tough it out, install everything fresh.
